A question I often hear from parents is “how can I help my child at home?” This question frequently comes up around May and June. Parents are preparing for summer break which often entails missing speech therapy sessions due to vacations or busy schedules. Our providers have many handouts and helpful tips for the parents in these cases but I also always recommend taking the time to read to your children. This study, found reading aloud to children may help build early literacy skills and also helps to increase the bond between parent and child. Building early literacy skills may have a long lasting positive effect on your child’s later reading and writing skills.Even if your child is proficient in reading, taking the time to read books that focus on their speech sound(s) allows for repeated practice and repeated modeling. This in turn, may help further their progress. With that in mind below is a list of books you may enjoying reading with your child. One extra tip is to check your local library. Not only do many libraries have wonderful summer (and year round) reading programs they also offer a wide range of children books! The list below consists of a couple examples of books for each sound but I encourage you to explore and find books that you and your child would enjoy reading together.
